this is a very limited run of 250 copies. mystical circles is a brand-new imprint with its eyes firmly on the dancefloor. the label s first missive comes courtesy of island times deejay, a dj/producer/re-editor previous best known for his dj mixes, which were uniformly full of obscure, hard-to-find disco gems. we have no idea what the source material is for either of the edits here, but they sound like caribbean disco records. disco smoking is unfeasibly heavy, driving and stomping, with mazy horn solos, jazzy funk guitars and hazy vocal snippets riding a booming bassline and sweaty, non-stop drums. dawson street is a more relaxed, and rubbery affair, albeit one rich in chiming melodies, spacey synth solos, winding sax lines and elastic bass guitar. as the welsh would say: tidy!

rich la bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate new york born in 1946. at age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered monk, mingus and art blakey. in 1965 rich moved to ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. after the band dissolved, he moved to nyc and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical godspell. in the late 70s la bonte moved to hollywood with shari famous, released a a few 7” singles as dada2, and started flatdisk records, a vinyl subsidiary of dave gibson s moxie record company.

whiskey disco #27, ladykillers ep by yse saint laurant. yse drops a sprinkling of femme fatale themed edits for this, his third full ep, on whiskey disco. whatever your saturday night plans, this ep will have something suited. the low slung, synth-riddled sunset woman, the groove driven and emotive crying woman both sit snug on the a side, leaving the b side for even more left-of-center grooves of ghetto woman and psychodelic woman. this ep further cements the foundation of yse as an amazing editor, producer and … ladykiller.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

toronto-based duo a digital needle are purveyors of disco, funk, & soul edits, pruned for the dancefloor & subscribers to the mancuso method of deejaying, with a preference for quality sound and selection over long, elaborate mixes et al. they join forces with fellow canadian re-editor/producer cyclist to deliver a killer 4-tracker of the finest disco-funk. the release comes as red coloured vinyl in a full colour sleeve photographed by top photographer matt barnes (who has worked with snoop dogg, dimitri from paris, mike skinner, lily allen), in the vein of a lost disco lp from the 70s and looks amazing. this is the first release on tripped out records and is one hell of a debut.
